Jim Wilson does many projects for the University of Georgia. However, one of the buildings he is designing has caused some controversy. Jim Wilson was asked to design a fraternity house for the Sigmathi fraternity. Most of the fraternities for the University of Georgia are located on Fraternity Row. However, Sigamathi did not want to have their house on Fraternity Row so they obtained property in a local neighborhood in Athens. Like any other residential neighborhood not wanting fraternity in their neighborhood they fought to keep Sigamathi out of their neighborhood. This caused many conflicts for Wilson & Dawson because of all the negotiations with existing neighbors. After many negotiations, the neighborhood ended up winning and the Sigamathi was not allowed to have their fraternity in the neighborhood. Even though they lost the property in the neighborhood, they were able to achieve a spot located in the downtown area of Athens. This resulted in a good ending and Wilson & Dawson Architects was able to start designing and renovating an existing building to house the Sigamathi Fraternity.
LEED or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design is an organization that pushes people to design their building to operate and to be more environmentally friendly. When someone is verified by LEED, this means they are capable of designing a green building. When a building is LEED verified, this mean that it meets the LEEDS many criterias and standards. Some projects require the architect and the building to be LEEDs certified. Some of the main criteria for LEED to verify you is that they encourage you to think of strategies that minimize the impact on ecosystems and water resources. They also wish that you promote smarter use of water, inside and out, to reduce potable water consumption. Promoting better building energy performance through innovative strategies and using sustainable building materials and reducing waste are also a few of the main credentials. The last main criteria is that better indoor air quality and access to daylight and views. There are other credentials that they think are also important that you can find on this page. There are many pros and cons in my opinion to getting your building LEEd certified. One of the pros is that your building is environmentally friendly and that it helps the environment. It also looks a lot better if the Architects or the building is recognized by LEED. Though when trying to design a building that meets all of those criterias it can become difficult. This can cause the building to take longer since more time and thought has to be put into the design. Sometimes, designing a LEED building can save you money but other times take a lot of money to design the building to meet Leed standards.
Atlanta has approved that 360 Architecture will design the new Falcons Stadium. Some of their projects include the New Meadowlands Stadium for the NFL Giants/Jets, and the Oakland A’s Cisco Field. The plan for the stadium is for it to be finished by the 2017 season. Although the new stadium is home to the Atlanta Falcons, it will also be used for other sports and convention and entertainment events currently held at the Georgia Dome and other new marquee events that could be hosted in the future. This new stadium is also estimated to cost 950 million dollars. The new location for this stadium is also just south of the Georgia Dome so it will not be too drastic of a change. This new sporting venue also has a very cool new design concept to it. The buildings design concept looks like a giant metal origami flower. What we know for the new braves stadium is that first Cobb County has gotten HKS Architects of Dallas, Texas to design the Brave’s new ballpark. Construction will start in 2014 and the new staduim will be open in time for the 2017 season. HKS Architects have designed stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts football teams. The new stadium will sit at the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285 in Cobb County. The new venue will seat 41,000 to 42,000 fans, which is slightly less than the 49,500 seats Turner Field is currently holding. The stadium will take up 15 acres of a 60 acre site that will feature ample parking and plenty of mixed-use development, everything from retail to hotels. The venue caters to vehicle traffic, with parking and no light rail service. The Atlanta Braves will also be selling the naming rights for their new stadium.
There is nothing wrong with Turner Field so why do they have to move it and build a new stadium for the Atlanta Braves. Turner field is about to be twenty years old and many people say that there are problems with it and that its too old for a stadium. They think people do not want to attend because it is so old and they are worried about the attendance . Though look at Fenway Park, that field is over one hundred years old. People go to Fenway because they love their team and it is a tradition. Also the Turner Field is where the Olympics were held so they are also getting rid of an historical piece of Atlanta. Another thing is they have now created loads of traffic in Cobb County when the stadium is moved there. Everyone uses one main highway road to get to Cobb County and there is not a subway or underground train so there will be a significant increase in traffic where a lot of people live. It is also really bad for the city of Atlanta to have things go to the suburbs because that show big cities crumble. When things start leaving the city tourist do not want to go there any more things get worse and it turns into a ghost town.
Many Companies outsource jobs but when companies outsource jobs to different places it hurts the locals. Similar to anything this idea of outsourcing happens with architecture too. When big Companies or Industries in Atlanta want someone to design a new facility they usually outsource the job to a bigger architectural firms . This hurts the smaller but local firms in the area. The smaller firms only get small jobs which are not enough to support the firm and help it get bigger. Though the big companies response is there are not any good architects in the local area. That though is the problem. Companies will not put trust in their local firms for even the smallest of projects. This is why the Architecture firms in our local community do not grow because they do not receive theses jobs from bigger and higher paying companies. We need to start putting more faith into the smaller firms so that Atlanta can grow together and support each other
